“Just sit Bella, no sit. Really? No sit. I don’t want to shake your paw. Bella, just sit! There it is! Nice sit. Wanna cookie?” Sometimes, most of the time, when I have a cookie or a tennis ball in my hand and I ask Bella to sit, she starts offering more behaviors then the sit. It is as if she is saying, “Surely, you would give me that cookie if I would sit pretty. No? How about if I say Hi and wave my paw at you? No? Ok, I’ll lay down and cover my nose. I know you like that one. No? Tada? No cookie yet??” Then she verbally demands the cookie or ball with a sassy bark, “G.I.V.E. M.E. T.H.E. C.O.O.K.I.E!!!!” I wait while she goes through her routine. I love it and it makes me laugh. I cannot however reward her cuteness (too often). The cookie will come when she sits. I liken Bella to myself in my walk with God. He will gently ask for me to just sit, listen and open my heart and mind to Him. My response, “Surely, you don’t want me to JUST sit?” And off I go, showing all my good deeds, and what I can do and what I would like to do if He would just BLESS me… and on and on I go offer behaviors that were not asked for. I’m sure He smiles at my antics. However, like Bella, the cookie will come when I just sit, listen and open my heart and mind to Him.
